Why Is My Pen-Style Tattoo Machine Getting Hot?

Causes, Troubleshooting & What to Do

A little warmth from a tattoo machine after running for a while isn't necessarily a problem. Modern pen-style rotary tattoo machines contain compact electric motors that are working continuously during a tattoo session, so some heat generation is expected.

But there is an important difference between a machine becoming warm and a machine becoming unusually hot.

If your machine is becoming uncomfortable to hold, shutting itself down, producing unusual noises, or displaying a temperature warning, you might have a problem.

Excessive heat can be a symptom of mechanical overload, electrical problems, a failing component, or a battery issue.

Fortunately, there are several things a professional artist can check before assuming the machine needs repair.

First: Some Heat Is Normal

Modern rotary tattoo machines use a small electric motor to convert rotational movement into the reciprocating motion that drives the needle cartridge. That motor is doing substantial work continuously—often thousands of cycles per minute.

As with other electric motors, some of the electrical energy used by the motor ultimately becomes heat. Long sessions and repeated use can therefore make the machine noticeably warmer.

FK Irons specifically identifies heat, vibration, mechanical stress, and long back-to-back sessions as factors that contribute to motor wear over time.

So a machine that is mildly warm after several hours of work isn't automatically defective.

If your machine is becoming unusually warm during an extended session:

  • Stop the machine for a quick break

  • Give it time to cool naturally

  • Don't continue operating it if the heat is becoming excessive

  • Check whether the machine returns to its normal temperature and behavior after cooling

Some machines have dedicated "excess temperature" warnings, which is helpful, but not all machines have this feature.

Second: The Machine May Be Working Harder Than Usual

A rotary machine doesn't experience exactly the same workload under every condition.

The motor has to overcome mechanical resistance while moving the needle mechanism. Pen-style machines may compensate electronically for changing loads, but increased resistance can still require the machine to work harder.

Cheyenne's SOL Nova Unlimited II, for example, specifically includes a "CARTRIDGE LOAD TOO HIGH!" error condition and instructs the user to change the tattoo module.

That makes the cartridge worth checking whenever a machine suddenly starts running hotter than normal no matter what machine you're running.

Try a fresh cartridge. A cartridge that isn't functioning correctly can potentially create additional resistance or an abnormal load on the machine.

Also verify that the cartridge is properly installed, the cartridge is correctly aligned, nothing is physically interfering with the cartridge, the cartridge isn't defective, the machine's grip and adjustment mechanisms are functioning normally, you're using cartridges appropriate for the machine and following the machine manufacturer's instructions.

If changing the cartridge makes the problem disappear, your problem is solved!

Third: Voltage and Operating Settings Matter

Another common place to look is the machine's operating settings.

Different pen-style tattoo machines have different electrical and operating specifications. There is no universal "correct voltage" that applies to every machine, cartridge, artist, and technique.

Manufacturers design machines around specific operating ranges. For example, Cheyenne's HAWK Pen 2 documentation specifies a penetration-frequency range of 50–150 Hz and identifies the corresponding operating range as 6.3–12.5 V.

Other machines have completely different specifications.

That's why the manufacturer's specifications for your particular machine should always take precedence over generic voltage recommendations.

Check the voltage you're running and compare it against manufacturer's recommendations.

Don't increase voltage simply because the machine seems to be struggling. If a machine that previously ran normally now requires substantially different settings to perform the way it used to, that can be a clue that something has changed mechanically or electrically. Your machine might need maintenance.

Fourth: A Cartridge or Mechanical Problem Can Increase the Load

Your machine's motor isn't operating in isolation. The motor drives a mechanical system that ultimately moves the needle cartridge.

If something within that system encounters unusual resistance, the motor may have to work harder.

Cheyenne's documentation provides a particularly useful real-world example: its SOL Nova Unlimited II can detect excessive cartridge load and instruct the artist to replace the tattoo module.

This is one reason a fresh cartridge is a useful troubleshooting step when a machine suddenly becomes hot.

If the machine runs normally with one cartridge but heats up significantly with another, don't automatically assume the machine itself is failing.

Fifth: Contamination, Damage, or Wear Can Cause Problems

Pen-style machines are precision instruments, and the motor and mechanical components inside them aren't designed to be treated like disposable equipment.

FK Irons identifies dust and ink contamination, drops and impacts, vibration, heat, and mechanical stress among factors that can contribute to motor wear and failure.

A machine that has been dropped can potentially develop an internal problem that isn't immediately obvious from the outside.

Likewise, contamination or damage can affect components such as bearings, shafts, or other moving parts.

Pay attention to changes in sound. A change in sound can be an important clue. If your machine suddenly sounds louder than usual, develops a new buzzing or grinding sound, vibrates differently, feels rougher while running, loses power, runs inconsistently, or gets substantially hotter than it normally does, don't assume the problem will correct itself.

Cheyenne's HAWK Pen 2 instructions specifically tell artists to switch the machine off immediately if they hear noticeably loud or unusual noises because this may indicate damage.

A machine that is both hot and behaving differently deserves more attention than one that is simply warm after a long session.

Sixth: Your Studio Environment Can Affect Machine Temperature

The surrounding environment matters, too. Here in Arizona where our shop is, it get ridiculously hot in the summer. The A/C can do its best to keep up, but with people coming in and out all day, it can get pretty hot in the studio.

Cheyenne specifies an operating ambient temperature of approximately 50–95°F (10–35°C) for both the HAWK Pen 2 and SOL Nova Unlimited II while Dragonhawk Mast machine recommend no more than 104°F (40°C)

If your workspace itself is unusually warm, your machine has a harder time shedding heat into the surrounding air. A machine operating in a cool, comfortable studio and the same machine operating for hours in a very hot room don't have identical thermal conditions.

If your studio is hot, try to keep the working environment within your machine manufacturer's specified operating temperature. Avoid leaving the machine sitting in direct sunlight. Don't store equipment in a hot vehicle and immediately put it into service. Allow equipment exposed to extreme temperature changes to return to appropriate operating conditions before use. Pay particular attention to wireless battery temperature in a hot environment.

Seventh: Wireless Machines Have Another Heat Source - The Battery

Wireless pen-style machines introduce another component that can become warm: the rechargeable battery.

Lithium-ion batteries naturally produce some heat during charging and discharging. UL Research Institutes explains that a small amount of heat during normal lithium-ion battery operation is expected.

However, excessive heat is a different matter.

Modern professional wireless machines may include battery monitoring and protection systems. Cheyenne's SOL Nova Unlimited II, for example, has separate warnings for excessive motor temperature and excessive battery temperature. Its documentation states that a potentially faulty battery should be replaced when an "EXCESS TEMPERATURE BATTERY" warning occurs.

Treat battery heat differently from ordinary machine warmth

If the battery itself becomes unusually hot:

  • Stop using the machine

  • Allow it to cool according to the manufacturer's instructions

  • Inspect it for visible damage

  • Don't continue using a damaged battery

  • Don't attempt to repair a battery yourself

  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions for replacement and disposal

Cheyenne specifically warns that damaged battery cells can cause fire or explosion and instructs users never to use damaged batteries.

UL Research Institutes likewise warns that authentic, safety-tested lithium-ion batteries incorporate protective systems designed to help prevent conditions such as overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, and overtemperature.

This is one area where saving a few dollars on an unknown or counterfeit battery isn't worth the risk.

Eighth: Don't Ignore a Battery That Is Swollen, Damaged, or Acting Abnormally

A hot machine is one thing.

A hot or damaged lithium-ion battery is another.

Signs that should make you stop using a wireless battery include:

  • Swelling or bulging

  • Visible physical damage

  • Unusual heat

  • Smoke or an unusual odor

  • Damage to the battery casing

  • Unexpected charging behavior

  • Repeated temperature warnings

  • The battery suddenly behaving very differently from normal

Lithium-ion batteries can experience a dangerous failure known as thermal runaway, in which the cell enters an uncontrollable self-heating state. UL Research Institutes notes that thermal runaway can result in extremely high temperatures, smoke, fire, and violent venting.

If a battery appears damaged, don't try to squeeze it back into shape, puncture it, open it, or continue using it to "see if it gets better."

Follow the battery manufacturer's instructions and applicable local requirements for handling and disposal.

Ninth: What About the Power Supply?

For artists using a wired pen-style machine, the power supply is another component worth considering.

If the machine is behaving strangely, check the entire power path rather than assuming the machine itself is responsible.

Look at the power supply, the machine cable, RCA or other connectors, connections at the machine, connections at the power supply, footswitch and associated connections, voltage settings, any visible cable damage.

A problem somewhere in the power chain can produce symptoms that may initially look like a machine problem.

If possible, troubleshooting with known-good compatible equipment can help isolate the problem—but always stay within the manufacturer's specifications for the machine and power supply.

A Simple Troubleshooting Process

If your pen-style tattoo machine suddenly starts getting hotter than normal, don't immediately start changing everything at once.

Instead, work through the problem methodically.

Step 1: Stop and let it cool

If the machine is excessively hot, stop using it.

Don't continue tattooing simply because it is still technically running.

Step 2: Determine where the heat is coming from

Is the heat primarily coming from: The motor/body of the machine, the wireless battery, the connection, the cable, the power supply?

That distinction can significantly narrow down the problem.

Step 3: Check the operating environment

Make sure the room isn't outside the manufacturer's recommended operating temperature.

Step 4: Check your settings

Verify that you're operating within the machine manufacturer's specified voltage/frequency range.

Step 5: Replace the cartridge

Install a fresh, compatible cartridge and see whether the behavior changes.

Step 6: Listen to the machine

Compare its sound and vibration with what you're accustomed to.

A new grinding, buzzing, rattling, or unusually loud sound is worth taking seriously.

Step 7: Inspect the equipment

Look for, damage, loose components, cable problems, battery damage, contamination, anything unusual around the cartridge connection.

Step 8: Test after cooling

If the machine returns to normal once cooled but repeatedly overheats again during ordinary operation, don't treat that as a permanent solution.

Repeated overheating is a symptom worth investigating.

Step 9: Contact the manufacturer when appropriate

If the machine continues to overheat, produces unusual noises, displays an error, loses performance, or behaves abnormally, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.

A professional tattoo machine is a precision instrument. Internal repairs should generally be left to qualified service personnel rather than attempting to diagnose or repair the motor or electronics yourself.

Warm vs. Too Hot: A Practical Guide

There isn't one universal temperature at which every tattoo machine becomes "too hot." Different machines use different motors, electronics, housings, batteries, and thermal protection systems.

Instead of relying on an arbitrary temperature number, look for changes from normal behavior.

When It's Time to stop and investigate

  • Machine is substantially hotter than normal

  • Heat continues increasing during ordinary operation

  • Machine becomes uncomfortable to hold

  • Performance changes as it heats up

  • Motor sounds different

  • Vibration changes

  • Machine shuts itself down

  • A temperature warning appears

  • Battery becomes unusually hot

  • Battery is swollen or visibly damaged

When in doubt, stop using the machine and allow it to cool.

It's far better to lose a few minutes troubleshooting equipment than to continue operating a machine that may be developing a mechanical, electrical, or battery problem.
